A Party Divided Cannot Stand

...and no, I'm not talking about the Republicans and the NY-23 race, where the party's choice of a wacko liberal doomed the district to be represented by a Democrat for the next 362 days. With ObamaCare coming up to a vote in about 15 minutes, he'll have ample opportunity to show if he stands with his constituents or his party....

I'm talking about the internecine warfare within the Democratic party - you know, the party that forced Joe Lieberman out because he only toed the line 99% of the time (and now may be the only man who can save us from ObamaCare - take that, says Joe !).

Those charming folks at MoveOn - the group that gave us "General Betray-Us" is targeting Democrats who do not fall in line behind that ever-so-popular trio of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama: is sending out emails today seeking more contributions for its campaign to defeat any Democratic senator who does not fully support Obamacare. Yesterday the left-wing activist group asked members to contribute "to a primary challenge against any Democratic senator who helps Republicans block an up-or-down vote on health care reform." Today, MoveOn reports that it has received $2 million in pledges in less than 24 hours. "It's a clear sign of how angry progressives would be at any Democrat who helps filibuster reform," MoveOn executive director Justin Ruben writes in the new email.

"The larger the war chest we can offer a potential challenger, the stronger the signal we'll send to conservative Democrats," Ruben continues. "So we're setting a huge new goal: $3 million in total pledges by the end of the week. That's plenty to launch a serious primary challenge."

MoveOn is already planning radio ads targeting Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu and Arkansas Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln over the health care issue.

Oh, I am sure MoveOn can pull this off - they did in Connecticut just a few years back. But despite winning the battle, they did not gain the seat, and ornery Joe is now the biggest foe to their liberal program, and he's got an axe to grind. A really big axe. And nobody can blame him if he's itching to swing it...

So what will MoveOn accomplish if they can unseat incumbents and replace them with purebred liberals in the general election? More Republican victories, that's what. If you can't take a message out of New Jersey - where the electorate voted against the very same liberal system that the Democrats and Moveon are hell-bent upon imposing on the nation - then my guess is you haven't been listening much to the people you claim to represent at all. There is only you, and your dogmatic fealty to liberalism.

So sad to see the once-resurgent Democratic party fall on its sword after a few "inconsequential" election defeats; don't they know that the people want "moderation" and "a big tent"; and that these battles for ideological purity are poisonous and will rend you asunder, forcing a disgusted public to avert its eyes and vote for the other party?

Well, I guess the Democrats are about to be reduced to a "rump party" who will always rue the day - November 3rd, 2009 - when inter-party ideological warfare reduced them from majorities to after-thoughts...
