General Petraeus Resigns...With A Gun To His Head?

I was expecting his resignation in the wake of the Benghazi massacre, more as a protest against the indifference of the Obama administration than any admission of guilt.  But this?  This sounds a little bit too...contrived, like a gunpoint confession:

In a statement to the CIA workforce, Petraeus wrote, "Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the president to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA. After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."

Of course, it could be true.  But then again, it sounds like something out of Soviet Russia, where a highly-touted, highly-competent military figure often got thrown under the bus, usually for "personal indiscretions", in order to protect the image of the party hierarchy.  Especially the guy at the very top of the hierarchy.

Could be this has nothing at all to do with Benghazi.  Could be this has everything to do with it.  The scapegoat has been designated, and  thus - convinced of the need to put party and Dear Leader before his own selfish needs - he sacrifices his career, his reputation, and essentially his life, so that the hierarchy may continue unblemished.

General Petreaus seems to have been killed, so that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton may live.  And that seems like a very, very bad tradeoff for this nation.

Did he know this, but took the fall like a good soldier takes any order?

Or is this Petraus' way of..."Going Galt"?  If any man can survive the coming storm, then return to lead us out, it would be him...

GENERAL PETRAEUS RESIGNS OVER AN AFFAIR, BUT . . . “Is the resignation really about the affair… or is it connected to Benghazi?”

Who was the affair with? That would seem to matter. He was scheduled to testify on Benghazi next week.

UPDATE: Moe Lane: “Seriously, Is there a single member of this administration that has a better public reputation now than when he or she started?”

ANOTHER UPDATE: If only Petraeus was president instead of head of the CIA then sleeping around wouldn’t be an issue.”  That depends. Is he a Democrat?

MORE: So extramarital affairs are now “get of of testifying free” cards? Good to know.

MORE STILL: Stephen Hayes: If David Petraeus was truly “looking forward to testifying” about Benghazi, as his friends claim, what’s stopping him from doing so?

Also: “The way to defuse every single conspiracy theory is to testify, as planned.”
