One would think Governor Corzine's bitch - ah, I mean New Jersey Attorney General Ann Milgram - would be too busy trying to solve the state's endemic crime, corruption, and illegal immigration problems to bother with frivilous legal actions against small businesses for infractions of an unwritten PC code.
Boy, would you be wrong. Annie the Good Liberal knows what her real priorities are, and that's helping the radical gay community commit a shakedown, and getting a fair share of the loot for herself to boot:
Neil Warren, eHarmony's founder, is a gentle, grandfatherly businessman who launched his popular dating site to support heterosexual marriage. An evangelical Christian author with a divinity degree, Warren encourages healthy, lasting unions between men and women of all faiths, mixed faiths or no faith at all.
Want a gay dating website? Go somewhere else, there are a gazillion of them. But no, New Jersey plaintiff Eric McKinley sued eHarmony in 2005 for not allowing gay matchmaking. And of course, the state gleefully jumped right into the fray:
This case is akin to a meat-eater suing a vegetarian restaurant for not offering him a rib-eye. But rather than defend the persecuted business, New Jersey Attorney General Ann Milgram intervened on behalf of the gay plaintiff and wrangled an agreement out of eHarmony to change its entire business model.
The company agreed not only to offer same-sex dating services on a new site, but also to offer six-month subscriptions for free to 10,000 gay users, pay McKinley $5,000 and fork over $50,000 to New Jersey's Civil Rights division "to cover investigation-related administrative costs."
So Ann forced Mr. Warren to overhaul his business model in a way that is at odds with his personal beliefs, forced him to provide services for free to gays, and wrangled $50K out of him to line the pockets of her own department.
So typical of the warped upside-down morality of New Jersey Democrats; Ann Milgram should be their new poster whore. Anyone still wonder why businesses are fleeing New Jersey - a state that has one of the smallest private sector job creation growth in the nation - and we are falling faster and deeper into a recession than any other part of the nation?
Ask the illegal immigrants and the crooked pols, the state is run for their benefit anyway, and your monies are theirs to use as they please...
UPDATE: Via The Agitator, some thoughts on this so-called "victory":
Ultimately, it’ll also be counterproductive. Because if feeds into the (usually, but not always incorrect) claim that the gay rights crowd is forcing its lifestyle onto others.
Freedom of association means that when private parties choose to associate with one another, some people will under some circumstances be excluded. Deal with it.
