The caption reads, "VARYING DEGREES OF RAGE: The Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, second from right, during the Days of Rage in 1969, and anti-health reform protesters in Washington on Sunday."
Now, over at American Power (where I got the above pic), they seem pretty irked by the comparison:
...there's no escaping the truly bankrupt moral equivalence NYT's claiming between a genuine domestic terrorist organization and a grassroots movement of conservatives, middle-class anti-tax activists, and an army of frustrated geriatrics. In contrast to a year's worth of tea parties and town halls, the Moscow-backed Weatherman launched a series of bombings starting in 1969, totalling 25 attacks in all, as part of its war against "Amerikkka." To this day, unrepentant terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn are venerated as social justice messiahs while today's citizen tea party activists wind up on DHS intelligence reports as "right wing extremists."
Yeah, but what else to we know about Bill Ayers, besides the fact he's a radical murderous scumbag? He's also a spiritual/political mentor to Barack Obama (much like everybody's favorite anti-Semitic preacher, Reverend Wright, and that peace-lovin', Jew-hatin' PalestinianRashid Khalidi ), who launched his political career in Ayer's kitchen. Ayers votes with Obama, apparently helped Obama write his autobiography , and was a partner with Obama in the ill-fated reform effort (sound familiar) known as the Chicago Annenburg Challenge.
I'm shocked to see the New York Times make such an admission of the strength and political power of the Tea Party movement; it's been a long time coming. It would be nice if they could come out and say it, of course, but one step at a time. Juxtaposing the Tea Party with Bill Ayers is just their way of saying that we are ascendant, and the Tea Party will soon usurp Bill Ayers as chief moral advisor to the president.
A big step for small minds...

It's funny that the Times even used a picture w/Ayers in it...does the Times with this picture finally define him as a radical? Or are they aware of the general disapproval of Ayers, and are trying to smear the tea partiers with him?
Either way, it is a condemnation of Obama's association w/Ayers - unless, of course, your hypotheses is correct!
American Power tracked-back with, 'Tea Partiers and Terrorists: Weighing Moral Equivalence'.
