Ah, The Boss. Made his fortune projecting an image - true, perhaps, at one time - of a hardscrabble workingman troubadour, writing and singing songs about the lives, loves, and lifestyles of the Jersey lower-middle-class.
He still writes those types of songs. However, he also lives in a gated mansion in Rumsun, New Jersey, with a backyard that opens up to the Navasink River, with a driveway filled with luxury cars. Good for him. Nevertheless, he seems to have become disconnected from the very people who made him rich, as he travels more and more in celebrity circles, and has become a hero not to the present-day residents of New Jersey, but to the Democratic Party of New Jersey.
OK, he's been complaining about Republicans since the 80's, when he carped about Ronald Regan using "Born in the USA" as a campaign song. But he went ugly in the last few years, actively holding fundraisers for Democratic candidates (including Barack Obama and Jon Corzine) in his mansion, Streisand-style, and refusing to play at the Governor's inauguration this year when the people of his home state dared defy his instructions and voted in Chris Christie (no matter - Christie, ever the thinker on his feet, hired a Springsteen cover band to play).
Now Springsteen is entitled to withhold his music when the voters choose a candidate other than the one he endorsed, but it gives lie to his "Jersey guy through-and-through" image. Actually, by using his music and celebrity to help elect Democrats, he is adding his liberal boot to the feet of those crushing Jersey's middle class with the side effects of the Democratic ideology: high taxes, lingering unemployment, business flight, lower standards of living - you name it, and Sprinsteen has supported the politicians that foisted it upon us.
A blue-collar man of the people? Or a liberal elitist, throwing cocktail parties for left-wing politicians who mouth populist rhetoric while figuring out a way to use it to line their own pockets? A soul-searching voice of a poor working man? Or the strident tone of another rich guy in the entertainment field who knows what's best for everyone?
Apparently, Springsteen displayed some true liberal values in his pursuit and affair with Jersey housewife Ann Kelly. Doesn't matter that he's married and she's married, Bruce, as a liberal icon, is entitled to have what he wants, morality be damned:
Ann Kelly, 45, was a housewife living with her mortgage-broker husband and two children in a $600,000 home in a leafy New Jersey suburb.
But when the married Springsteen entered her life in 2005 -- showering her with concert tickets, serenading her during rehearsals and confessing she was on his mind while he toured -- the Jersey girl got lost in a "Tunnel of Love," court records alleged.
The relationship between Kelly and the "Born to Run" singer began with chitchats on the treadmills at a high-priced Red Bank, NJ, gym, but the pace quickened with lunch dates and eventually a full-on affair
Accusations of an illicit tryst came to light after Ann's husband of 17 years, Arthur Kelly, 46, filed for divorce on March 27, 2009.
During the yearlong divorce proceeding, Arthur filed court papers alleging that Ann enjoyed a rendezvous with Springsteen while the husband was laid up in a hospital with heart trouble.
Workouts spilled into lunches at a nearby cafe, with Ann's two daughters sometimes tagging along. The children got to know Springsteen so well that they called him "Bruce," according to court records.
...in 2007 and 2008, unsigned Valentine's Day cards without stamps or postmarks showed up in the Kellys' mailbox in West Long Branch...
Look, if you're just a rock-n-roll star, then fine, dubious morality is part of the game, and no one expects any better. But Springsteen is a proud Democrat and identifies as such, and is surrounded by liberal politicians who want his blessing and his cash. And so, we see what is acceptable behavior for liberals: A married man stealing someone else's wife, taking her away from her sick husband, and ingratiating himself to her kids.
The next time Springsteen endorses a politician, assume that he/she holds the same values as he does: Private political fundraisers, spouse-stealing (should it fulfill your momentary personal desires) and petulant withholding of talents should the outcome of an election not match your demands.
My favorite part of Springsteen's infidelity? The Boss, as your everyday liberal, is so much smarter than your average Jersey girl, he has to instruct them on proper political thought:
The wide-ranging chats Ann had with Springsteen got into politics. When the blue-collar hero and liberal icon learned that Ann was conservative, he gave her two books to read....
No word on whether Ann converted to please her lover. Springsteen did teach all of Jersey a lesson, though: What to expect from Democrats, and what liberal morals and values look like in practice...

Can't believe I'm the first to leave a comment...anyway, for those who may find this in the Darkness on the Edge of Town, here goes.
ReplyDeleteI used to really dig Springsteen. The best I'd ever known in Rock, absolutely the best.
On a beautiful day in Los Angeles at the reservoir, many people were walking. Springsteen came toward me and my girl Rona, a cute and savvy Jewish girl from Brentwood. He was walking with his then wife, I think her name was Julia (?). I remember what they were wearing. Shorts, socks, tennis shoes, t-shirts, zippered hoodies, baseball caps and big sunglasses. Springsteen had that shit eatin' grin on his face...he finally got a half way decent chick. A feeling only another guy would know and understand.
After we passed each other I really felt the urge to "jack that muther fucker". Reasons: For sellin' out his music (only sissyboy chumps sell out there music), and for sellin' out on the United States of America. Springsteens liberal and negative viewpoints on this country bruised the image of the only true Promised Land. The land of the United States of America. The land and everything that the Pilgrims gave up just to gain so little for their personal selves. Freedom...you can't hold it in your hands...you can only hold it in your heart...
Springsteen is now just an old piece of shit with money, a past, and disrespect for his wife. When you take a vow and you take a wife, you make a covenant with God. With God and Country, you may not sell out. God is too powerful and country is too cherished.
Springsteen for me is now dead...
I agree 100 percent,and I could continue but I wont,im a military American lifer

ReplyDeleteWow. Extremely illuminating. I knew he started getting really weird around Tunnel of Love back in 87. I'm not surprised by his Hollywood-esque freakout with infidelities and leftist support which only serve to hurt the people about whom he used to sing.
ReplyDeleteI wonder which two books the bum gave her?
ReplyDeleteTHANK GOD HE IS A LIBERAL!!!! HE IS WHAT HAS ALWAYS MADE AMERICA GREAT- NOT JUDGMENTAL HYPOCRITESO THAT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT TRUE AMERICA!
ReplyDeleteI said it after a week of hearing big Bruce's Born in the USA song that it was not a Pro American song. Springsteen is such a hypocrite because he allowed his song to be misunderstood so he could sell millions of Albums. Bruce lives the high life of The American Dream but this Moron is a Borderline Communist.
ReplyDeleteSpringsteen is a just another highly overrated elitist dope, whose vocal cords are up his butthole.
ReplyDeleteAnother rich, out of touch douche trying to tell middle class Americans how to live their lives. Tax dodging, wife stealing a hole. Springsteen and DeNiro, so much smarter than us middle class tax paying citizens.
ReplyDeleteHe tapped into the middle America struggling worker and/or vet thing with Nebraska and Born in the USA making money from others hard times and service. He then went on to cheat on his first wife, an actress who gave up her career, with his last wife and then cheated on her. Trashbag! After playing in SA he mocked the audience, who paid ridiculous amounts of money to see him, in an interview suggesting they are backwards and harped on about whites and apartheid. He opened his concerts with a Mandela song thinking he was making some point. Arrogant dick!
